The Village of McConnelsville

Nestled in Southeastern Ohio along the Muskingum River lies the charming Village of McConnelsville. Inhabited in 1817, and named the County Seat of Morgan County, the village was named after Robert McConnel, one of the community’s earliest residents. The location of the village along the river led to industry growth, and by 1886 the Village of McConnelsville was flourishing with several manufacturing businesses. Today The Village of McConnelsville is home to several businesses and has a population of approximately 2,500.

The village’s Main Street is lined with beautiful homes, locally owned retails shops, restaurants, and several businesses. The charm of this small town radiates throughout the community, welcoming visitors as they travel the Appalachian Byway, watch an Ohio Valley Opry show at the Twin City Opera House, or visit Morgan County, The Front Porch to the Great Outdoors.

McConnelsville has one of the most intact historic Main Streets in the State, with the focal point being the historic Twin City Opera House, built in 1894. The theater hosts movies, live dramas, ghost tours, and musical performances including the Ohio Valley Opry. Take a stroll along the Muskingum River on the village’s scenic walking path and imagine past generations using the same waterway when elk roamed the countryside and grazed along the banks of the river the Native Americans referred to as “Elk Eye.” Grab a kayak and paddle your way through town to get a different view. Enjoy the Muskingum River Parkway State Park and lock through McConnelsville at Lock #7, part of the only remaining system of hand-operated locks in the nation. Grab a bite to eat at one of the terrific eateries, visit our quaint shops in town, and stay at a historic boutique bed and breakfast that has been lovingly restored. Most of all, be prepared to say “Hello” to every person you pass in town, because that is what we do here.
