The M & M Fire Department

The Malta & McConnelsville Fire Department (M&M) was founded in 1930 with a hose cart and ladder. McConnelsville then purchased a Model A motorized fire truck, and it was equipped with two (2) 35-gallon pressure water tanks, including a hose reel for each tank.

On March 31, 1930, a meeting was organized by Mayor Ed Shafer, and a group of eleven (11) men formed the beginning of the Malta & McConnelsville Fire Department. The men met in a small building behind the courthouse, and over the next several weeks, more men were added to the department. After a year of hearing the “bell tolling” of the courthouse clock to alert the department of an emergency, funds were raised, and a siren was purchased.

In December 1972, the fire department created an EMS division to provide emergency medical services to the citizens of Morgan County. The department responded to the daily challenges of saving lives by increased training of staff and purchasing state of the art equipment. This continued effort has allowed the department’s dedicated professional paramedics, intermediates, and basics, to continue providing excellent care and advanced life support to the people of Morgan County.
