The Village of Stockport

The Village of Stockport is an inviting village established along the banks of the Muskingum River in Morgan County, Ohio. Named in 1838 after a town in England, this delightful river community is home to Lock #6 and dam of the Muskingum River Parkway State Park, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as the Muskingum River Navigation Historic District.

When driving into Stockport one can’t help but notice the beautiful historic Stockport Mill, which has been renovated into the Stockport Mill Inn and Restaurant and is a travel destination for many looking for a relaxing getaway. Overlooking the dam, every themed room has a beautiful view of the river and surrounding countryside. Another favorite historical inn with charm and character is the Hardware Inn. Once a full-service hardware store built in 1851, this now renovated inn, provides accommodations for couples or families and stunning views of the Muskingum River.

Stockport was also home to a famous riverboat captain, Captain Isaac Newton Hook. Captain Hook was a boatman who spent his working years on the Muskingum River as a ship captain and builder. Not wanting to be buried where water would run over top of him or where his wife could dance on his grave, he built his own tomb complete with a rounded top, and today, many tourists visit his grave to see his monument. Another historical site of interest is the area of the Big Bottom Massacre of 1791, where a war party of 25 Delaware and Wyandot Indians attacked a settlement killing nine men, one woman, and two children.
